Pen Making

People often say “Do you really make these pens?” So I thought a brief explanation of the steps involved in making a hand-turned pen would be in store. These fine writing instruments are individually hand crafted out of the finest exotic woods from around the world, not stained. They are individually hand made to your order. Each one is unique, and no two are ever alike. I do not use duplicators or automatic cutters of any kind. Just my own two hands, a lathe, and some good chisels and gouges, (turning tools). After the barrels are shaped, they are then sanded and friction polished to a high gloss finish. Then, I assemble them by hand, putting the turned pen barrels and the gold-plated parts together to create one-of-a-kind writing instruments. I do not manufacture the gold-plated and brushed Satin parts for my instruments.

Below is a short summary of the steps it takes to create a fine writing instrument.

Step 1 - Select a piece of beautiful wood or other interesting turnable material.

Step 2 - Cut the wood to size for the type of instrument or accessory going to be made.

Step 3 - The material is carefully drilled for brass tubes that will hold the ink refills and other parts.

Step 4 - Then it is mounted on a lathe where the instrument is then shaped by hand with quality chisels and gouges.

Step 5 - Sand and sand some more. Start with 150 grit sandpaper and go through finer and finer grits, to 1,000 for a beautiful finish.

Step 6 - On the finished turned barrels of wood, sealers, lacquers and/or waxes are applied, taking time and care to apply whatever is best for the type of material being used.

Step 7 - The instruments then are assembled.

Step 8 - For the final step, I make sure the instrument works smoothly and properly.
